JERSEY GIANT
This breed also made the ultimate meat list (see here), since their large size provides lots of meat if you’re willing to wait the eight to nine months for them to reach maturity (not uncommon in large breeds). In the late 1800s, brothers Thomas and John Black developed the Jersey Giant with the specific intention of creating a premium table bird that could replace the turkey. Suddenly, their size makes sense! They were admitted to the APA in 1922. According to the Livestock Conservancy, their status is “watch.”
