Chanteler
The Chantecler chicken originated in the Quebec Province of Canada and is recognized as the first Canadian breed of chicken. Developed under the supervision of Brother Chatelain, monks of the Cistercian Abbey in Oka, Quebec worked to create a hardy fowl with a vigorous and rustic temperament. The White Chantecler was introduced to the public in 1918 and admitted to the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection in 1921 as part of the American Class. The breed is particularly known for being a good winter egg layer. Chantecler chickens are known for their calm, gentle, and personable temperament, making them a great choice for backyard flocks and family farms.
